Getting Around Ayia Napa: Airport Transfers, Buses, Taxis & Car Hire

31 May 20262 min readBy Vladimir

Ayia Napa is easy to reach and easy to get around, but a little planning saves time — especially arriving from the airport and deciding whether you need a car. Here's a practical rundown.

From the airport to Ayia Napa

Two airports serve Cyprus:

  • Larnaca International Airport (LCA) is the closest, roughly a 45-minute drive from the Nissi Beach area.
  • Paphos International Airport (PFO) is further, around 1 hour 45 minutes by car.

From the airport you have a few options:

  • Pre-booked private transfer — the simplest door-to-door choice, arranged in advance.
  • Taxi — available at the airport; agree the fare or confirm it's metered before setting off.
  • Car hire — desks at the airport; handy if you plan to explore (see below).
  • Public bus — intercity buses connect Larnaca and the Ayia Napa area, the most budget-friendly option, though slower and with luggage limits.

Tip: confirm your transfer or plan in advance for late-night arrivals, when public transport is limited.

Do you need a car?

It depends on the season and your plans.

  • In peak summer, you can manage without one: the beach, shops and restaurants are walkable or a short taxi away, and local buses run frequently.
  • In the shoulder and winter months, a car is genuinely useful. Buses run less often, and a car makes Cape Greco, quieter beaches and inland villages easy to reach.

Remember that driving is on the left in Cyprus. Roads are good and signposting is clear. In peak summer, parking near Nissi Beach fills quickly, so arrive early.

Getting around locally

  • On foot — the Nissi area is compact; the beach, shops and tavernas are within easy walking distance of the residential streets.
  • Local buses — run along the coast and into town, more frequently in summer than winter.
  • Taxis — readily available; useful for evenings out or with luggage.
  • Bikes and e-scooters — available to rent in season for short hops along the coast.

Everyday essentials nearby

For day-to-day needs around the Nissi Beach area you're rarely far from:

  • Supermarkets and mini-markets for groceries and beach supplies
  • Bakeries for fresh bread and pastries
  • Pharmacies for everyday health items
  • ATMs and card payments, which are widely accepted

Having a kitchen makes the most of nearby supermarkets — one reason a self-catering base works well. The apartment on this site is a short walk from shops and the beach, and you'll find more on choosing where to base yourself in where to stay near Nissi Beach.

Planning further afield

If you'd like to explore beyond the beach, a car (or seasonal buses and boat trips) opens up Cape Greco, Protaras and more — see Cape Greco and beyond.
